Mobile phones has evolved through the years from the first Motorola phone and Martin Cooper released the first mobile phone called Motorola DynaTAC 8000X on 3rd April,1973 to the latest iPhone 17 or Samsung Galaxy 26 Ultra.In today,we look at the companies behind the phones we love and cherish.
1. Apple
I’m not talking about the fruit apple lol,I’m talking about the first trillion dollar company founded by Steve Jobs,Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Apple was founded on 1st April,1976 in California USA.The company which was founded in Steve Jobs parents garage has gone on to make gadgets like the iPhone series, iPads,airpods, MacBooks, apple watches. Timothy Donald Cook popularly know as Tim Cook is the Chief Executive officer of Apple from 24th August,2011 till date.
2. Samsung
Samsung takes the second spot. Lee Byung- Chul is the founder of Samsung.The name Samsung means 3 stars. Samsung was founded in 1938 in Daegu South Korea.Many people will be surprised to know that Samsung didn’t start as a tech brand but rather deal in noodles,fruits and dried fish. It was in 1969,that Samsung released their first gadget which was Black and white Television. Apart from mobile phones,the South Korean gadgets also produce home appliances,tablets and watches.
3. Xiaomi
Located in Beijing China, Xiaomi is one leading producer of phones in China. Xiaomi means little rice in China. Founder Lei Jun is the brain behind the brand.Xiaomi was formed on 6th April,2010. Lei Jun was is known for copying Apple blueprint and making it better. Xiaomi Mi 1 was the first phone released by the brand on 2011. Xiaomi also owns the Poco and Redmi brand. Xiaomi also produces cars.
4. Oppo
Chinese billionaire Tony Chen is the brain behind Oppo. He is known as the mystery man of Chinese Technology. Tony Chen also owns brands like Vivo,OnePlus and Realme which all forms the BBK Electronics. Oppo headquarters is in Dongguan China. Oppo started as a DVD and MP3 player in 2001. Oppo released its first mobile phone called Oppo A103 in 2003. The Oppo A103 was nicknamed Smiley Phone due to the smile users get anytime they received a message or phone calls from friends and family.
5. Transsion Holding
Many people think Tecno,Infinix and Itel are owned by different people. But the funny thing is,its own by Transsion Holding,a Chinese conglomerate headquartered in Shenzhen China. Transsion Holding owns all the three brands including Oraimo. It’s has competitive advantage in Africa,India, Bangladesh. George Zhu is the founder of Transsion Holding after he left Ningbo Bird phones.Tecno T101 is the first mobile phone released in 2007.It has a dual sim and a long battery capacity. Transsion Holding also produces television and laptops.
6. Honor
Honor was once a sub brand of Huawei.Due to US sanctions, Chief Executive officer George Zhao made an announcement to sell Honor for 15 billion dollars to Shenzhen Zhixin Technology and more than 30 Huawei distributors and dealers. Honor first mobile phone released after that was Honor Magic 3 on August 2021.Honor in 2026,has the second sales volume in China behind Vivo.
7. Motorola
Motorola was the first brand to make a mobile phone.The brand was on top of the world in sales in 1998.It has gone through two phases of ownership, first owned by Google and now Lenovo. Most of Motorola users are in Brazil,India and USA. Motorola headquarters is in Chicago Illinois USA. Sergio Buniac is the chief executive officer since 2018 till date.
8. Google
Google is the most used search engine in the world. Founded by two Stanford University PhD holders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.Google purchase android software for $50 million dollars. Google partnered with HTC to make the HTC Dream on 22nd October,2008.HTC in 2010 made the first Google phone called Google Nexus One on 5th January,2010. Google headquarters is in Palo Alto California USA.
9. Huawei
Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former People’s liberation army officer.Huawei started as a telecom network. Huawei served as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for Vodafone and T-Mobile.In 2010, Huawei released it first mobile phone with it logo on it.It was called Huawei Sonic and had a price tag of $80.It was regarded as the cheap phone in that era. Huawei headquarters is in Shenzhen China.
10. Nothing
The first time I heard this brand,I kind of laughed a little.After doing some research i got to love what the brand stood for. Nothing mobile phone was founded by former OnePlus co founder Carl Pei after he left in 2020. Nothing first product was earbuds in July,2021.Almost a year after releasing the earbuds, Nothing released it first mobile phone and was valued at $399 dollars.
